HERITAGE

Heritage

Photography  |  2020

Heritage was inspired by Zoe's Cuban Heritage to connect with her roots; and how she and her siblings navigate the world. Through florals, textiles, color, and mirrors Zoe has created images that are loaded with symbolism. The use of mirrors to skew her subject matter is intentional to give viewers an altered perception of what is real and what isn't. Much like how Zoe navigates the world as a mixed woman. The overwhelming use of florals throughout this series is representational of the overwhelming traumas that come with Cuban Americans being displaced from their homeland and have never returned. With Zoe's siblings being her muse for self portraiture she is interested in the relationship she has with her heritage through her siblings in order to have a more 'clear' understanding of self.

"When I learned to recognize myself in other people I discovered that everyone became my mirror. I see myself reflected back at me through the eyes and actions of those I love most and those who I do not."
